A Lazy Girl's Guide To Haircare - Function Of Beauty Review

My hair has been through an awful lot over the years. I box-dyed it for years, didn’t get regular trims, used SO much heat and no heat protection spray (I know, terrible!) and so it was in awful condition. I had so many split ends it looked like my strands of hair didn’t want to be friends with each other! My hair is very thick and naturally curly (a.k.a. frizzy), so finding products that work to tame it is a (wooly) mammoth task.

A few years ago, I decided I’d had enough and decided to tackle my problem hair once and for all. I booked regular appointments with my hairdresser to properly colour and trim my hair. I stopped using box dyes. I started using heat protection spray and less heat on my hair. The only issue I had was finding a shampoo and conditioner! How can you possibly choose a shampoo/conditioner that does everything you need it to do all in one product? I bought quite a few different ones for different hair types/problems and used them on some sort of rota to try and fix my hair.

I’d heard about Function of Beauty before but I didn’t know if it was worth the price. As someone who used to just grab their shampoo and conditioner with the weekly food shop, I was very skeptical at first. Customisable, personalised haircare? Could it really make that much of a difference? I’m not very good at jumping on the bandwagon with things that are really hyped up online, which means I never watch tv shows that everyone else is watching and I wait a while before buying the latest ‘must have’ products!

Last year, I finally decided to try Function of Beauty out for myself and signed up on their website. As a self-confessed lazy girl, I am definitely looking for a quick, simple routine which is basically handed to me on a plate, rather than having to try lots of different products for months to try and figure out what works, what's best to use to fix a certain problem and in which order. Function of Beauty have a quick, 2 minute quiz to determine your hair type and your hair goals, whether it’s to shine, hydrate, fix split ends - they have it! I filled it all in, chose my scent, the strength of the scent and the colours (which was easily the most exciting part) and waited (im)patiently for them to arrive in the post.

SIDE NOTE: My favourite scents are Cherry Bl(awesome) 🍒, Nude (P)each 🍑 and Takes Two To (M)ango 🥭!

After a couple of weeks (as they come from America), my Function of Beauty order finally arrived. You get two bottles, two pumps, a leaflet reminding you of your hair goals and the hair type you selected in the quiz and a cute set of stickers to decorate your bottles (or hoard for planners/scrapbooks if you're like me!). Your bottles even come with your name on them, which is a cute little added touch.

After using them for just a few weeks, I could already see and feel a massive difference in my hair and decided to sign up for a subscription! Currently, I get my subscription delivered every 4 months - which is the perfect amount of time for me to finish my current bottles.

I wasn't sure how long they'd last at first (as for some reason, I expected the bottles to be bigger!) so when I signed up I set my subscription to deliver every two months. I quickly edited this on my profile (which is really simple to do!) as I only use a few pumps of the shampoo and conditioner at a time so they actually last for ages. Obviously this depends on how often you wash your hair, how long/thick your hair is, so it's down to personal preference.

My hair is so much softer, shinier, is a lot easier to manage and style, and I’m so glad I decided to bite the bullet and try it for myself! I also love that you can pause or edit your subscription at any time if you need your products sooner or if you want to delay them. Currently, I use my Function of Beauty shampoo and conditioner every other wash, just so that my hair doesn’t get too used to it (as I’ve heard this is apparently a thing!). For my other wash, I use the Mane & Tail shampoo and conditioner to try and grow my long hair back (which I buy here).

As a Function with Benefits member, I actually have a referral link here where you can get a free hair mask with your shampoo and conditioner! I’ve just received a free hair mask myself (as you get a free product after so many refills on the subscription) and it’s now part of my self-care routine.

Have you ever tried Function of Beauty?
